Page of Cups: Unexpected Inspiration

Tarot Stories
2 min readDec 31, 2020

After a much-needed and somehow still hectic holiday, the first card I pick is the Page of Cups: new opportunities, inspiration and ideas. How fitting. Today is also New Years Eve, a time of reflection and meditation.

I’ve never been one to make New Year’s resolutions, however I did set goals for myself at the start of 2020. Surprisingly and most certainly because of the pandemic, I actually achieved a lot of the things I set out to do. I read many, many, many (46) books, learnt new recipes and subsisted on mostly home-cooked meals. I made exercise a regular part of my life with daily walks and yoga or pilates every other day. I kept my teeth clean, made more of an effort with my family and friends, and as a bonus began embracing some form of spirituality. There’s still more that I want to do that I need to think through, but this truly felt like the year I grew up and became an adult.

Page of Cups from the Rider-Waite Tarot Deck

What you see: A youth in colourful clothing and a turban holds a cup with a fish emerging out of it. His tunic is decorated with flowers. He appears to be standing on a shore with the sea behind him.

What it means: The emergence of the fish is unexpected and surprising to the youth. He seems to be contemplating what to do with it. The colourful clothing and the water elements signify creativity which is driven by emotion.

The story: The Page of Cups represents intuitive inspiration; a new idea or opportunity that has come out of the blue.

Reversed meaning: Reversed, the card represents creative blocks or doubting or repressing your ideas and creative energies.

Reflection: Like the Pages of the other suits, this one is also a call to explore a new or different facet of your life: creativity. However, it is up to you to decide what to do with your new ideas and how to act on the opportunity.
