Five of Wands: Rash Conflict

I’m halfway through my day but it’s been a long one already. I started at 5:30am and I know the lack of sleep is definitely affecting my emotions — they feel like they are right at the surface, ready to bubble up at the slightest provocation. I realize that whenever I am in this state (it happens more than I’d like) I notice I read into emotions far more than I probably should. I see emotion where perhaps they aren’t really there — so that’s the context that colours my interpretation of the card I picked today.

Speaking of colours, there’s a lot in this one. I initially thought this was some sort of dance, following the celebratory card I picked yesterday. Perhaps not. Isn’t fighting a form of dance anyways?

Five of Wands from the Rider-Waite Tarot Deck

What you see: Five people, each holding sticks, appear to be fighting with each other. Their wands don’t make contact with bodies.

What it means: The card indicates conflict though with no body contact it could signify chaos on show rather than actual fighting.

The story: The Five of Wands represents conflict or shallow disagreement; this may be opposition that often stands as an obstacle in the journey.

Reversed meaning: Reversed, the card signifies cooperation or agreement, or alternatively avoiding conflict.

Reflection: The background of the card is blue which relates to the element of water and the connection to emotion. This card may be an emotional one — the outcome of conflict or going up against opposition often evokes a strong emotional response. Perhaps the lesson is to acknowledge those emotions in yourself (generally anger, defensiveness, irritation) and recognize their impact in influencing the outcome.
